2019 Top 100 Impact Freshmen

Analysis

Freshmen often make a huge impact on championship teams.

Look at last season as a prime example. Oregon State righthander Kevin Abel improved as the season progressed and was the College World Series Most Valuable Player following his Herculean performance against hard-hitting Arkansas in the CWS Finals.

He wasn’t alone. Arkansas third baseman Casey Martin was incredible last season, and you could argue the Hogs might not have been where they were at the end of the year without his special contributions.

Abel and Martin, along with Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson, are just three of many examples of mature freshmen shining in college baseball last season, but they’re the ones who stood out amongst the rest, especially Abel and Martin with what they accomplished in the postseason.

Who will be those guys from the freshman class this spring?

UCLA’s Matt McClain and Mississippi State’s JT Ginn were premium draft picks last summer who chose to attend college, and both are expected to have big-time campaigns for their respective ranked clubs. Meanwhile, LSU looks to surge with Landon Marceaux earning rave reviews, and Vanderbilt got a steal in hard-throwing righthander Kumar Rocker.
