Rogers: Which 10 Coaches Shined In 2016?Analysis
Coastal Carolina head coach Gary Gilmore did an incredible job this season, guiding the Chanticleers to their first CWS trip and national title. As a result, he earned the distinction as the 2016 D1Baseball.com Coach of the Year.
Several other coaches out there deserve serious mention as well, including TCU’s Jim Schlossnagle, Arizona’s Jay Johnson and UC Santa Barbara’s Andrew Checketts, among others.
Besides Gilmore, which 10 coaches did the best coaching jobs in ’16? It’s time to do our full breakdown.
Jim Schlossnagle, TCU: The Horned Frogs were expected to have somewhat of a rebuilding year, and while there were some definite see-saw moments throughout the season, the Frogs played very well in the Big 12 tournament, won a regional and took care of No. 1 Texas A&M, on the road, in a super regional. In Omaha, the Frogs were a win away from playing for the national title.
Jay Johnson, Arizona: What else can you really say about the job Johnson did? It’s pretty self-explanatory and rather incredible. The Wildcats didn’t have a fruitful 2015 campaign, but Johnson arrived last summer and turned around the culture almost immediately. As a result, the Wildcats returned to their winning ways this past season, almost earning a regional host before going through an amazing run in the postseason with a regional win in Lafayette, super regional win in Starkville, and of course, a finish in the CWS Finals.
