Mississippi State Shows True GritAnalysis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – If you had to choose a word to define the night for the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday it would be “grit.” Their sophomore ace Konnor Pilkington was tough as nails over seven strong, hard-fought, at times dominant innings, and their lineup scratched and clawed for every at-bat against a very sharp Auburn ace in Keegan Thompson. This type of effort in their 5-2 victory is what has defined the Mississippi State run up the top 25 rankings in recent weeks. On paper, they have every right to be scuffling, particularly when you look at the injuries they’ve sustained on the pitching side, but the grit they showed on Friday night is a big reason they are where they are.
Whether you’d like to credit first-year head coach Andy Cannizaro or the strong core of veteran, high-character players on the roster, or a combination of both, there is a clear attitude that this team has bought into. They kept constant pressure on Auburn all night, whether it was Konnor Pilkington continuing to challenge righty hitters with his power fastball or their hitters spoiling some nasty Keegan Thompson offerings, they never seemed to take their foot off the gas pedal over nine innings of baseball.
