Off The Top Of My Head: May 25Analysis
StitchHeads, welcome to Dogpiling Season.
It’s late May and conference tournaments are kicking in this week. That means on-field celebrations of mass pilings crushing bones and knocking the wind out of guts by the players and nervous anxiety by winning coaches across the country.
While I got to see an epic, epic ending to last week’s Ivy League Playoffs between Princeton and Yale – one of my favorite games I have covered in a long time – three other champions and NCAA Tournament tickets have been scanned since then: Alabama State in the SWAC, Navy in the Patriot League and Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC.
SOME D2 DOGPILING
On Monday, I got to see another great dogpile as a team celebrated winning a title and advancing on in the post-season. But this time, it was Division II. The West Regional was played out in Riverside on the campus of Cal Baptist University.
The homesteading Lancers, the No. 1 seed in the six-team Regional, were playing Cal Poly Pomona, the No. 3 seed, and needing to beat the Broncos twice, since CPP administered a painful 6-5, 10-inning win on the Lancers in a winner’s bracket game back on Friday.
In this game, the Lancers busted out to a 5-0 lead after two innings thanks to a pair of home runs from Antonio Chavarria and Ryan Williams. And with All American RHP Tyson Miller (who is expected to go in the top five rounds of the MLB draft in a couple weeks) on the mound, CBU appeared to be in great shape to force a second deciding game later on Monday night.
