HOUSTON — The Houston College Classic, now officially called the Shriners Hospitals For Children College Classic, has always featured some of the nation’s premier programs, easily serving as one of the ultimate gateways to the college baseball season.

This season’s event is no different as Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Rice, TCU and Houston butt heads at Minute Maid Park this weekend. Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas Tech head into the weekend hoping to booster their stock on the national stage, while UH aims to keep showing it can win without stud pitcher Seth Romero, and the Hogs look to prove strong in the post-Andrew Benintendi era.

It’s so far, so good for most of these teams, but this weekend’s games will provide a reliable litmus test and create some separation.
