Spratling: Team USA’s Top 10 PerformersAnalysis
USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team spent a six-day stint in Southern California in a summer training camp of sorts. After a day of introductions, administrative work and implementation of signs, the team embarked on a five-day tour of Southern California stadiums playing exhibitions against California Collegiate League teams in different venues ranging from major league parks, collegiate fields and the Urban Youth Academy in Compton.
Like a major league spring training operation, it was a tryout for some players with five players cut as the roster was trimmed down to 24 players and two pitching alternates for the first leg of a summer tour that will see Team USA play games in Taiwan, Japan and Cuba.
Here’s the 10 players that stood out the most on a roster laden with talent:
1. Brendan McKay
The man who never smiles and wipes out any opposition’s smile when they see his name on the lineup card did it with both the bat and his arm throughout the trials week. After leading the team in hitting through the first four games, Louisville’s two-way star moved to the mound in Team USA’s Southern California finale and dominated there as well.
