Teams On The Upswing: April 4

Every Monday, national writers Aaron Fitt and Kendall Rogers look at five teams that raised their profiles over the weekend. Here’s this week’s list of teams On The Upswing.

Cal State Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton Titans logoThe Titans fell out of the Top 25 with back-to-back series losses to Maryland and Long Beach State, but they rebounded with a strong 4-0 week that included a midweek win against rival UCLA and a sweep of upstart Cal State Northridge in their first Big West series. Heading into the Long Beach series, Fullerton coach Rick Vanderhook expressed frustration with the lack of potency of his offense, and the Titans scored just four runs in all three games of that series. But they finally got their bats going this week, scoring 14 runs against the Bruins, seven runs on Friday against CSUN, and eight runs on Sunday.

Fullerton needed its veterans in the middle of the order — Tanner Pinkston, Jerrod Bravo and Dalton Blaser — to carry more of the load, and they did so this weekend. Pinkston went 6-for-11 in the three-game set agains the Matadors. Blaser went 7-for-15 with four RBIs and four runs on the week, and Blaser scored six runs in the four games. On the mound, sophomores Connor Seabold (6 IP, 1 ER) and John Gavin (3 IP, 0 R) combined to shut down the Matadors in Saturday’s 2-1 affair. Pitching will continue to carry the Titans, but if they can hit like they did this past week, they just might eventually supplant UC Santa Barbara as the team to beat in the Big West.
