The Postseason Primer: May 14

What’s Inside:

• Top Eight Seed Analysis
• Teams Helping Their Cases
• Teams Hurting Their Cases

1. UCLA (41-8, 19-5 PAC 12)

RPI: 2

Records vs.: 10-3 vs. Top 25, 15-6 vs. Top 50, 25-7 vs. Top 100

The skinny: Nothing has changed with the Bruins over the past week. Though Vanderbilt took over the No. 1 spot in the RPI, the Bruins are still in excellent shape to earn the top national seed. UCLA has yet to lose a series this season and it took care of business on the road against Washington State last weekend. UCLA is an outstanding 16-4 on the road, while also having the No. 2 NSOS in college baseball. Typically, it’s easy to poke holes in someone’s resume. Not the Bruins.

2. VANDERBILT (41-10, 20-7 SEC)

RPI: 1

Records vs.: 12-7 vs. Top 25, 22-8 vs. Top 50, 29-9 vs. Top 100

The skinny: The Commodores continued to bolster their national seed resume over the past week, taking a midweek contest on the road from RPI No. 8 Louisville, while also taking two of three from RPI No. 14 Missouri this past weekend in Nashville. Vandy has strong marks across the board, and also is 10-4 on the road this season. Vandy is a lock to be a top eight seed. Now it’s about where it will be in the top five come Selection Monday.

3. ARKANSAS (39-13, 19-8 SEC)

RPI: 6

Records vs.: 14-4 vs. Top 25, 19-8 vs. Top 50, 24-11 Top 100

The skinny: Nothing has changed with the Razorbacks and their standing over the past week. Sure, their RPI dropped two spots over the past week after losing a single game at home to LSU. However, the metrics all look terrific with Arkansas leading the country in Top 25 RPI victories. The Hogs finish the regular season with a series at Texas A&M (13). So, really, they’re in good shape no matter what happens from an RPI standpoint.
