West Notebook: ASU’s Fearless Montoya
AnalysisWhen Arizona State opened the season, Chaz Montoya was slotted for the closer’s role. Sun Devils head coach Tracy Smith wanted the freshman lefty from Glendale (Ariz.) Centennial in the high-pressure situation because of his competitive nature and his fiery spirit. Though he’s only listed at 6-foot, 160 pounds, Montoya takes the mound like he’s Nolan Ryan. He brings the bravado and isn’t afraid to challenge hitters.
