DQ Classic: Illinois Gets The HardwareAt The Ballpark
MINNEAPOLIS — Three days. Nine games. 83 innings. Very little sleep.
That’s what the Dairy Queen Classic was for me. Though I’m not going to complain. I love this tournament. This is the second year I’ve been to it and I wouldn’t have missed this Big 10-Pac 12 format this year. Sleep? Pfft, that’s what July is for.
If you’re keeping track of these kind of things, the Big 10-Pac 12 Challenge ended up going the way of the Big 10 after they won five games and lost four. The icing on the Spam for the monsters of the midway ended up being the fact that Illinois ended up being crowned the champions of the DQ Classic finishing the weekend a perfect 3-0 with wins over each of the Pac 12 schools.
This might’ve been the best non-conference weekend for Dan Hartleb and his Fighting Illini since winning an early season series at LSU in 2009.
And can you get any more of a white-knuckle weekend that what we saw here in Minneapolis this weekend? Six of the nine games ended up being decided in the eighth inning or later. Wow. It wasn’t a high-pressure or post-season kind of weekend, but it ended up being an intense amount of games.
