MORGANTOWN, W.V. — With his pitch count sitting at 107 after eight innings of work, Derek Clark was prepared for one of his West Virginia coaches to find him in the dugout between innings to discuss whether or not he would return to the mound for the eighth, and he knew exactly what he would say: “Leave me in this game.”

But that conversation never came. And there was no mound visit in the ninth after Clark issued a leadoff walk, or after he induced a tailor-made double play ball that an error turned into a two-on, no-outs[…]
