Perez’s heroics cap off magical Miami comeback

As Carlos Perez rounded third base, he spread his arms wide, inviting water.

Perez, the Miami Hurricanes’ starting catcher and nine-hole hitter, got what he desired. His joyous teammates hit him with bottled water, ice water and everything, perhaps, short of holy water.

Actually, the latter might have helped explain the minor miracle that occurred late Friday night as the 11th-ranked Hurricanes rallied to defeat the 16th-rated Duke Blue Devils, 10-8, in 11 innings.

Perez had the game-winning hit – a two-run, tie-breaking, walk-off homer that was the first such dinger of his career.
