Coastal Carolina reacts to locking up a slot in the Sun Belt Conference title game.

Taking Stock Of The Sun Belt

At The Ballpark

LAFAYETTE, La. — We’re now four days into the Sun Belt tourney and the only two left standing are the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Troy Trojans. Those two teams will face off on Sunday afternoon in a winner-take-all finale at Russo Park here in Lafayette, Louisiana. And if this title game is anything like the three games they played against each other earlier this year, it’s going to be a white-knuckler.

So now that most of the field has been eliminated, here is how the standings look for the two brackets in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament…

Bracket One:
Coastal Carolina, 3-0
South Alabama, 2-2
Georgia Southern, 1-2
UT-Arlington, 1-2
Arkansas State, 0-1

Bracket Two:
Troy, 3-0
Texas State, 2-2
Louisiana, 2-2
Little Rock, 1-2
Georgia State, 0-1

As a reminder, here is how the teams came into this Sun Belt Tournament week in the RPI:
– Coastal Carolina, No. 24
– Troy, No. 43
– South Alabama, No.52
– Louisiana, No. 54
– Georgia Southern, No. 67
– Little Rock, No. 89
– Texas State, No. 126
– Georgia State, No. 129
– Arkansas State, No. 170
– Appalachian state, No. 179
– UT Arlington, No. 185
– UL-Monroe, No. 192

And here is how they look as of this evening:
– Coastal Carolina, No. 20
– Troy, No. 37
– South Alabama, No. 48
– Louisiana, No. 57
– Georgia Southern, No. 78
– Little Rock, No. 94
– Texas State, No. 116
– Georgia State, No. 131
– Arkansas State, No. 177
– Appalachian State, No. 180
– UT Arlington, No. 185
– UL-Monroe, No. 197

So what started out as a conference with four possibles for at-large berths into the NCAAs has probably been whittled down to just two. And those two are the two teams that are slated to take part in the championship winner-take-all game on Sunday afternoon from the mind-glowingly impressive Russo Park. Let’s take a quick snapshot into how the Chants and the Trojans got to this point.
