Spratling: Muckenhirn’s Gem Stymies USC

LOS ANGELES — Zach Muckenhirn chucked his leather ball catcher over his head in exclamation. It was the first game of the season, but the North Dakota junior lefthander gave a glove flip to the heavens worthy of Omaha.

“I just couldn’t even contain it,” he said.

Behind him, Muckenhirn’s teammates celebrated their 1-0 victory over No. 12 USC heartily. After the game, they posed for pictures with smiles that wouldn’t fade. Every so often, a random primal scream of joy was expelled.
