Looking back on 2023, it’s still hard to fathom just how absurdly dominant Wake Forest’s pitching staff was. How did the Demon Deacons, playing their home games in a notorious hitter’s park, manage to lead all of Division I in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio and hits allowed per nine innings? In a year when home runs flew out of ballparks at an all-time record pace across the country, how did Wake Forest manage to post a staff ERA of 2.82 — nearly a full run lower than second-place Tennessee (3.63)?
