D1Baseball/AstroTurf Player Of The Week: Central Arkansas’ Gavin StoneAwards
It was a big week with a plethora of big-time performances around college baseball. But one in particular stood out, and for that, Central Arkansas junior righthander Gavin Stone is the D1Baseball/AstroTurf National Player of the Week.
Central Arkansas entered the season as one of the favorites to win the Southland Conference regular season title. And perhaps this past weekend and Stone’s outing against SE Louisiana will get them going. Stone made history by recording the program’s first no-hitter since 2013 in a 2-0 win over the Lions.
Stone faced just one batter over the minimum after walking a batter in the middle innings. However, he recovered from that by retiring the final 14 batters he faced, including getting his 13th strikeout in the final at bat of the game.
“Good things come to those who work hard,” Central Arkansas head coach Allen Gum said. “Gavin has put the time in and worked hard with Coach Harlan working on a process instead of results. He shows up each day ready to get better at his craft, and he’s the type of guy who always puts the team first.”
Stone, a 6-foot-175-pounder, and Lake City, Ark. (Riverside) native, is having quite an impressive spring for the Bears. He has a 3-1 record and a 1.30 ERA in 27.2 innings. Stone also has struck out 31 and walked six, while teams are hitting him at a low .161 clip. He ranked in the Top 55 of starting pitchers in college baseball coming into the season, while the hard throwing righty also is a rising prospect.
