D1Baseball/AstroTurf Player Of The Week: Texas’ Ivan Melendez

Ivan Melendez couldn’t have made his presence known in more impressive fashion than he did last week for the Texas Longhorns, and for that, he’s this week’s D1Baseball/AstroTurf National Player of the Week.

Melendez, who leads the Longhorns with a .375 batting average, eight home runs (tied with Cam Williams), 30 RBIs and a .739 slugging percentage, had one of the better weeks in recent memory, hitting a ridiculous .556 with two doubles, six home runs and 16 RBIs, while also homering in all five games last week, including two in the series finale and series sweep over Kansas State. Melendez hit a home run in six-straight games, dating back to the previous week.

With Melendez leading the charge offensively last week, the Longhorns went a perfect 5-0 and outscored opponents a whopping 60-14.

It was a week to remember for the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder, nicknamed the ‘Hispanic Titantic’ by Texas fans.
