BLACKSBURG, Va. — It takes time to transform a struggling program into a contender in a power conference like the ACC, where it isn’t easy to move up the ladder. But Virginia Tech has made steady progress in the first three years of the John Szefc era, and the Hokies got off to a strong 11-5 start in 2020 before the pandemic shut everything down. That start included a quality series win at Louisiana and a sweep of Bryant — two perennial contenders — followed by a hard-fought series loss at Georgia Tech that could have gone either way.
