What does uk have to do to be a nat seed?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:04 Kypat

Aaron Fitt:

I think UK needs to have a better week than Stanford and Southern Miss — I think those three teams are competing for one national seed, and the final week will determine who gets it. Right now, you could pick any of the three and justify it easily. They have different strengths and shortcomings on their resumes. Should be interesting to watch.

What would it take for Texas Tech to overtake UNC for the #2 national seed or is that wrapped up in your opinion? What Big 12 teams still have a chance besides Tec, TCU, Oklahoma, Texas, West Virginia?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:06 Bectio TTU

Aaron Fitt:

You know, I don’t think it’s wrapped up yet — Texas Tech’s metrics are really not far behind UNC’s. We love UNC’s 12-3 record against the top 50, but TTU is right there too at 12-5. UNC has more top 50 wins (19-6) than TTU (14-7), but top 100 wins are closer (30 for UNC, 27 for Tech). And Tech did win the regular-season title in the No. 1 RPI conference. UNC’s superior nonconference SOS (No. 14 vs. No. 93) might ultimately keep the Tar Heels ahead, but again, this is not a slam dunk right now. If Tech has a strong week in OKC, I could see the Raiders jumping over UNC.

Really respect the job yall do. For the most part you play error free ball unlike some other sites out there…. I am of the opinion that the committee peaks forward to possible CWS matchups when they set the top 8 seeds instead of just going 1-8 based on resumes. Louisville seed may be moved practically anywhere based on the s

Monday May 22, 2017 12:08 Osufight

Aaron Fitt:

Thanks for the kind words. My feeling is that the committee does not really consider the potential Omaha matchups when seeding 1-8, but I don’t know that for a certainty because I’ve never been inside the actual room. But I do think Louisville is in play anywhere from 4-7.

Who is your regular season Freshman of the Year?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:09 Mike

Kendall Rogers:

Mike — I think I would go with Texas A&M’s Braden Shewmake or Southern Miss’s Matt Wallner. Both of those guys have had profound impacts on their respective teams. Shea Langelier at Baylor is another guy who’s had an outstanding season as a young player.

Which Big Ten team has the most potential to win a regional?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:10 Brian

Aaron Fitt:

I still really like Maryland’s personnel, but I’m alarmed by how poorly its offense has performed down the stretch — they’ve lost four straight series, so it’s hard to feel good about picking them to win a regional. But if they can figure it out, watch out, because the talent is there, and Brian Shaffer can beat anybody in the first game of a regional — that dude is legit. Honestly, I think any of the four teams we’re projecting to make regionals (Michigan, Maryland, Nebraska and Indiana) are capable of winning a regional, and it’s tough to separate them based on what they have done this season. Right now, if I’ve got to pick one Big Ten team with the best chance, I probably lean Michigan.

[Comment From Mitchell MMitchell M: ]

Arkansas.. Safely a host, or would a win or two in Hoover really seal the deal? Think 2-&-BBQ would have them going on the road next weekend?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:11 Mitchell M

Kendall Rogers:

Mitchell,
I think when you look at the RPI, the resume, the conference record and more, the Hogs are very very safe from a hosting standpoint. I would hope that two losses in Hoover wouldn’t ruin what is a pretty good resume. The other thing at play here is that there’s not more than one obvious team to replace the Hogs with as a host. The options aren’t great at the bottom of the hosting picture.

[Comment From Brendon from Pebble BeachBrendon from Pebble Beach: ]

Is Stanford an absolute lock for a regional host? Even if they were to get swept in Pullman? I assume they would not fall from a bubble national seed to off the host line.

Monday May 22, 2017 12:11 Brendon from Pebble Beach

Kendall Rogers:

Brendon — You can go ahead and get your tickets for a regional. The Cardinal will host in 9’s final season. The resume is strong, the conference record is strong, and the RPI is strong. In your scenario, at least that series would have been on the road as opposed to at home. Still, I don’t see much to worry about here.

  Kendall Rogers
12:13
[Comment From Brendon from Pebble BeachBrendon from Pebble Beach: ]

In the recap on Saturday, it was stated that 7 national seeds are essentially set going in this final week. The final national seed spot comes down to 3 teams – Stanford, Kentucky and Southern Miss. Give us a breakdown of the situation…Stanford has the lowest RPI of the 3 but a much better resume than Southern Miss, but gets stuck with Washington State this weekend which does not help. Southern Miss is red hot so the current status of the team looks good albeit with no quality wins. And Kentucky will have a chance to take care of business with a good SEC tournament. Who is your leader in the clubhouse for that last national seed as we stand today? And who ends up with it come Monday?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:13 Brendon from Pebble Beach

Aaron Fitt:

I think you did a pretty good job cutting to the heart of it. I don’t want to spoil the suspense for tomorrow’s field of 64 projection (we’ve already recorded the nerdcast), so I’m not going to tell you who we settled on. But certainly I think we all believe that Southern Miss would be hard to deny if it can keep this winning streak going through the conference tournament — an 18-game winning streak heading into selection monday would be awfully loud. And I don’t expect the Wazzu series to crush Stanford in the RPI — WSU is No. 103, with a roughly .500 overall record. Shouldn’t have much of an effect, especially since those games are on the road.

  Aaron Fitt

[Comment From BrettBrett: ]

You mentioned 3 potential teams for national seed. If USM goes 4-0, what do they need the other two to do?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:13 Brett

Kendall Rogers:

Brett — If Southern Miss goes 4-0 and wins the conference tournament and Stanford and Kentucky both have strong weeks, boy, the committee has an incredibly difficult job to do because I think all three would have outstanding resumes to be a national seed. For now, in that scenario, I would probably lean USM for the simple fact it dominated both aspects of the season (regular and conference tournament).

[Comment From GregGreg: ]

Was UCLA’s sweep of Utah enough to make them a lock for the postseason?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:14 Greg

Aaron Fitt:

Pretty close, but not quite a lock. Still just 28-23 and No. 50 in the RPI with four games left — I think they need to avoid going 0-4 this week to get in. But they’d probably still get in with a 1-3 showing this week, because 17 or 18 wins in the Pac is usually enough, even with a modest RPI.

Anything Arkansas can do in Hoover to be national seed? Or is it more of others in front of them needing to lose as well?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:15 Bradley

Bradley — I suppose Arkansas could pull a Clemson and storm through the conference tournament and be a national seed, but for starters, it would need USM, Kentucky and Stanford all to struggle throughout the week.

Oregon State Baseball; what is left to say? {fill in leading question about how good this season has been, how good the pitching staff is, etc.}. What do you guys talk about at D1 when you talk about the Beavers this year?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:17 Matt

Aaron Fitt:

Yeah, it really is hard to find new things to say about this team — what an incredible season. The newest development is Drew Rasmussen’s happy return from TJ; the fact that he is getting stronger and stronger and was able to go 5.2 scoreless innings this week was awfully encouraging as we head toward the postseason. He was the final piece Oregon State was missing; now that he’s back and dealing, the Beavers look so scary.

A team like Florida who’s locked into a national seed … how should they handle the SEC Tournament with basically nothing on the line?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:19 Larry

Is the baseball playoffs like basketball where if you’re let’s say a number two seed then you get the 63rd ranked team in your regional?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:19 Isaac

Aaron Fitt:

Nope. The baseball committee does not seed 1-64, or even 1-16. Only 1-8 — so you could conceivably be the No. 1 national seed and get paired with the de facto No. 9 national seed in a super, for geographic reasons. I go back and forth on whether or not I think the committee SHOULD seed teams 1-64. Obviously that would be a good thing from an equity standpoint, but there’s also something to be said for trying to keep teams roughly within their geographic region when possible, to make it easier for fans to travel to postseason games.

[Comment From DanDan: ]

Might be a stretch, but if Texas can finish 4-0 in the big 12 tourney what’re the chances they host if any? Especially if they beat TCU and Tech to do it. They’d be 38-20.

Monday May 22, 2017 12:20 Dan

Kendall Rogers:

Dan — Not seeing the Longhorns as a potential host right now. There are a few teams ahead of them in the hosting mix. Never say never in that scenario, but coming into the weekend, the ‘Horns were closer to being on the bubble than as a host. A lot would need to happen for that to change.

What teams from WCC could get an at large bid?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:20 Frankthetank879

LMU and Gonzaga are definitely in the at-large mix, and maybe Saint Mary’s, but I think the Gaels and BYU are longer shots than LMU and Gonzaga right now.

[Comment From JeffJeff: ]

Is UConn in a position to secure an at-large bid? If so, what do they need to do in order to be a lock?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:21 Jeff

Kendall Rogers:

Jeff – UCONN would be in right now, IMO. The Huskies probably could use a couple of wins in the conference tourney to be safe, though, because you never know how many “stolen” bids there will be in other league tourneys.

What’s the chance that UCLA will stay in the West for the Regionals? Long Beach, Corvallis, or possibly Arizona?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:22 Bobbruinbear

Aaron Fitt:

Well they can’t go to Corvallis or Tucson because those hosts are in the same conference, but I think Long Beach is a pretty strong bet, since there won’t be another Pac-12 at-large candidate in easy driving distance. Of course, if UCLA is a 3-seed, the committee might send another West Coast 3 like LMU to Blair and ship UCLA elsewhere (and who knows where?).

  Aaron Fitt
12:24
[Comment From AlexAlex: ]

How many teams are we gonna see get in from the west coast? I am counting 4 from the pac 12, 2 from big west, 1 from mountain west, 1 from the WAC, and 1-2 from the WCC, any chance that the WCC gets 2 or the Pac 12 gets 5 to make 10 west coast teams?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:24 Alex

Aaron Fitt:

I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. The only question for me is whether the WCC gets 1 or 2. At this point, I think New Mexico has played its way out of at-large position, making the MWC a surefire 1-bid league. Big West is locked in at 2, and Pac looks just about locked in with 4. If Washington or Utah sweep their final series to get to 15-15 in the league, MAYBE they’ve got an outside chance to sneak in, but I think it’s unlikely.

[Comment From GregGreg: ]

How close is Sam Houston State to clinching a regional birth? Could the Southland Conference have 3 teams in? Thanks!

Monday May 22, 2017 12:24 Greg

Kendall Rogers:

Greg — Don’t see the Bearkats getting into the at-large mix right now with an RPI of 69. That just isn’t in territory for an SLC team. Will need to win the conference tourney, and if that happened as of right now, the league would then be a three-bid league in all likelihood.

12:25
[Comment From RobertRobert: ]

The wheels are coming off for Texas A&M at the absolute wrong time (2-7 over their last 9 games)…do they need to win at least a game or two in Hoover this week to feel safe?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:25 Robert

Aaron Fitt:

Still think the Aggies are safe at 16-14 in the SEC with series wins vs. Auburn and at LSU… but you’re right, it’s gotten dicier down the stretch. I think one win in Hoover would help them breathe easier.

What needs to happen for UCF to host?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:25 Matt

Your take on Southland Conference and if you think the league will receive two bids this year?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:27 SLC Fan

Aaron Fitt:

I do think it’s a likely two-bid league, with McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana as strong at-large candidates. If a third team wins the conference tournament, I still see SLU getting an at-large, with McNeese right in the mix too, making this a possible three-bid league (although I could also see McNeese getting squeezed out). But the Lions should be safe either way.

If Wake Forest happens to win the ACC Tournament, would they have a chance at a national seed? Do you see them as having a chance to make some noise in the post season?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:28 Wakefan

Aaron Fitt:

Yeah, I could certainly see that. The committee does take conference tourney runs into consideration, we’ve seen that repeatedly. Clemson played its way into a national seed last year after going 16-14 in the regular season, so Wake is in much better position at 19-11 heading into the conference tourney. And yes, I really like Wake Forest’s club and think they’ve got a very real chance to make it to Omaha.

What would NC State need to do in the ACC tournament to get in the hosting conversation?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:32 George

Aaron Fitt:

I think if the Wolfpack can win the ACC tourney it’s got a shot. 16-14 in the league, RPI around No. 30… need to jump up into the mid-teens, but they do have momentum, with 13 wins in their last 15 games. It’s a long shot, but there’s a possibility.

[Comment From Carl JamesCarl James: ]

As a possible 4-bid league, if a non-likely at-large wins the Big Ten Tournament in Bloomington (not unprecedented) will the committee specifically punish a Big Ten team or just the next poor team on the bubble?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:34 Carl James

Aaron Fitt:

In that scenario, I could certainly see the Big Ten getting five bids… but if, for instance, Maryland goes winless in the conference tourney after losing its last four series, maybe the Terps would get squeezed out. Or if Indiana falls flat, maybe the Hoosiers could be punished for finishing sixth in the standings (albeit just two games out of first). I think Maryland would be in more jeopardy than Indiana — feel like the Hoosiers are in good shape.

How has Luke Hemlich & Jake Thompson helped themselves for the draft this year? Were they say round 8-10 guys and worked their way to say rounds 2-3 or how good of draft prospects have they became.

Monday May 22, 2017 12:36 OSU Baseball Fan

Aaron Fitt:

Yeah, I mean Heimlich was quite possibly an after-the-top-10-rounds guy last summer, but he has played his way into the top 50 picks of the draft, easily. Thompson has also made a big move, but I think he fits more in the 3-5 round range because some scouts aren’t in love with his delivery or secondary stuff (but obviously it’s a power arm and a physical frame and a superb stat line).

What does dbu need to do to make a regional? Win the conference tourney or just make it to the championship game?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:41 dbu fan

Kendall Rogers:

DBU — Would need to win the auto bid. The Pats have an RPI of 70 with a 1-8 record vs. RPI Top 50. That’s just not going to get it done. Win the tourney or bust, which is surprising, because I thought this team would be very good this spring.

Ole Miss & South Carolina a separated by 1 conference win, and 5 spots in the RPI. Everyone seems to be in agreement that Ole Miss is safely in. What would need to happen to cause them to flip flop?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:42 Lucas

Kendall Rogers:

Lucas — The difference between the two teams is that South Carolina has lost eight-straight conference series, where as Ole Miss has shown at least some sort of ability to win series in conference. That’s a major distinction between the two right now.

[Comment From JakeJake: ]

I understand Oregon is having a tough season, but I’ve got an RPI question for ya guys. Swept by #1 OSU, competed in every game, dropped 5. Wsu gets swept gains 13, same weekend Oregon wins on the road at USC and dropped 12… Just looking for some kind of understanding on how this is computed, thanks guys.

Monday May 22, 2017 12:42 Jake

Aaron Fitt:

Ah, the RPI, she moves in mysterious ways. Oregon didn’t get as much help from those three OSU games because they were at home, and it didn’t get a significant road boost at USC because the Trojans are 20-31. WSU got a big bump by going on the road to Corvallis, even though it got swept. And of course, there are always other hidden factors at play — if a few teams you played four times earlier in the season had a really good or really bad week, that can still affect you later. For instance, Oregon played Mississippi State three times early on, and MSU got swept this weekend, so its winning percentage went down, which retroactively hurts Oregon. Oregon played Santa Clara four times early, and Santa Clara had another 0-4 week — again, that takes a toll. Etc etc.

Now that the Titans will not win the Big West and may possibly end up 3rd in the conference, does a sweep by Long Beach cause any concern regarding post season play for the Titans? Also, where do you see Scott Hurst in the upcoming draft after his 4 home run day?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:47 72Titan

Aaron Fitt:

I still think the Titans would be safe even if they got swept again by the Beach… but they could be sweating a little bit. Hurst has always had tools even though he’s undersized — plenty of scouts liked him out of high school. He has definitely helped his stock with a strong season. Not sure exactly where he fits in the draft, probably somewhere in the 5-10 round range.

We considered Nebraska heavily for the Top 25 in the preseason, so we clearly had high hopes for the Huskies. We did give some pause when the Huskers went through quite the rut in the middle of the season, but to Darin’s credit, they bounced back and finished strong. Intrigued to see what the Huskers do in the postseason.

With CCU winning their last 11 SBC games to take the regular season title, what do they need to do in the conf tourney to secure an at-large if they don’t win it?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:51 Bob

Aaron Fitt:

Chants still need to make some noise in Biloxi because their RPI is still fringy (No. 48), and their top 50 (2-8) and top 100 (8-12-1) marks are still well below normal at-large standards. The regular-season title and momentum could help offset that stuff, but I just think they need to make a deep run.

Is NC State safely in the tournament or is there a chance they can play themselves out with a poor ACC Tournament?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:53 Stu

Kendall Rogers:

STU — Aaron and I talked a little about this on the podcast, but you could make an argument for NC State to be considered in the rankings. The Pack is playing well at the right time and finished with a 16-14 mark in the ACC (along with a good RPI of 31). I think the Pack makes the field of 64 no matter what happens in Louisville.

Explain the RPI to me. LSU has a better record against a better SOS than Kentucky, yet their RPI is worse. What other metric is included in the RPI?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:54 Gene

Aaron Fitt:

They’re back to back in the RPI, so it’s very close… but the difference is probably that Kentucky has played more road games (23) than LSU (18). And road games are worth more in the formula.

Let me start off by saying I’m dreaming (not drinking) before I ask my question. What’s the magic number this week in Hoover for South Carolina to have a chance at sniffing the NCAAs? Obviously losing 8 series in a row is rough, however the only silver lining to it would be they somehow found a way to salvage 1 game each weekend during those 8 series. If they can find a way to win 3 in Hoover (don’t laugh), could that be enough? Sitting at 13 wins now, that would get them to 16 SEC Wins and it’d also even up the season series w/ a couple NCAA bound opponents. We haven’t won a game since 2012 in the SECT, and if they lose to Vandy tomorrow it’s a moot point……but can’t a guy dream!!! Thanks guys for all your coverage.

Aaron Fitt:

You’re a regular John Lennon! Sure, I’ll allow you to dream… winning three games in Hoover would probably give South Carolina at least a chance. I mean, the RPI is there, and you’re right, there is some value to not getting swept — it keeps that conference record within striking distance of an at-large spot. They need to win at least three games to have a shot (and I sure as heck don’t envision that happening), and even then they’d probably be on the bubble, but that discussion would get interesting.

With one week left in the regular season, who are your leaders for national player and pitcher of the year? I’ll take McKay for player and Heimlich for pitcher.

Monday May 22, 2017 12:58 Matt

Aaron Fitt:

I think I’m probably with you. We only give out one Player of the Year award, and it can go to a position player or a pitcher (or a guy who does both!). Feel like McKay is the clear favorite, though Heimlich and Rooker have had incredible years and are right in the discussion.

IS UCLA in the Tournament even if they lose 2 out of 3 to Oregon?

Monday May 22, 2017 12:58 Eric Captain Morgan

Kendall Rogers:

I think UCLA would still be in the field, yes. Very good conference record right now, though I’d like the overall record and RPI to be a little bit better.

Do you know of any candidates to replace Coach Marquess at Stanford? Also, any update on Tristan Beck?

Kendall Rogers:

We will have an update on several coaching jobs, along with Stanford later this week. #StayTuned

What do you guys think about LSUs bullpen heading into postseason? Hess and Newman look great along with Bush and Gilbert. Can they get by with those 4?

Monday May 22, 2017 1:00 Matt

Aaron Fitt:

Yeah, I certainly think they can — everybody shrinks their pitching staff in the postseason. You can really just ride 5-7 guys all the way through the postseason, especially if you stay in winners’ brackets (and oftentimes even if you don’t). LSU definitely has enough quality guys in the bullpen to make a run at a national title.

With Georgia’s fairly strong finish, what are the chances Scott Stricklin returns as head coach in 2018?

Monday May 22, 2017 1:00 JordanDawg33

Kendall Rogers:

Jordan — I think Scott will be back for another season after the Bulldogs finished strong, especially considering I was told it was 50-50 a few weeks ago.

Any chance Texas, OU, Baylor or West Virginia can sneak into a regional hosting spot if one of those four teams wins the Big 12 Tournament next weekend?

Monday May 22, 2017 1:01 Josh

Kendall Rogers:

Josh — I think Oklahoma is the team on that list that could host. I suppose Baylor could have an outside shot if it rolled through the tourney in OKC.

Love your work guys. Hey how much does that final conference series loss hurt La Tech’s at large chances?

Monday May 22, 2017 1:02 Aussie ball fan

Kendall Rogers:

Aussie — La Tech needs a solid showing in the conference tournament. Right now, on the good side of the bubble, but not a completely clear case.
