Is Indiana close to making the top 25 after a few impressive weeks of play?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:02 thom

Kendall Rogers:

Thom — You are right. Indiana has been very impressive. We debated Nebraska and Indiana for the Top 25 this week, and we might have actually had the Huskers slightly higher on the board considering Erstad’s club took a series AT Bloomington a few weeks ago. With that said, both of those teams are playing well down the stretch.

Can Texas get a host if they finish with2 series wins?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:03 Dan

Kendall Rogers:

Dan — I would say no — but never rule it out — series wins over TCU and West Virginia would be loud, and certainly would be a big boost to the Longhorns’ RPI. Lots of dynamics at work here the final few weeks of the season.

Is Brendan McKay the runaway favorite for the Golden Spikes award, or are their others that could still challenge him/are ahead of him?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:04 Patrick Kelley

Aaron Fitt:

I continue to believe it’s a two-man race between McKay and Brent Rooker, but McKay is pretty clearly the favorite in my mind because of his incredible two-way prowess. David Peterson, JB Bukauskas, Luke Heimlich are also having great seasons and should battle for Finalist spots.

What does Southern Miss have to do to host a regional?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:06 Eagles

Aaron Fitt:

Nice bounceback weekend for the Golden Eagles, who definitely climbed right back into the thick of the hosting discussion. Up to No. 21 in the RPI, 7-4 vs. top 50, 13-9 top 100 — those are all solid metrics. They’ll probably need to win the C-USA regular-season title and finish inside the top 20 of the RPI to host, but I think they’ve got a real shot.

[Comment From Go BeavsGo Beavs: ]

What is up with Bryce Fehmel for the Beavs? These past few outings have looked poor for him. If the Beavers have a weak spot on their team, is it their Saturday starter? Do you think they will try to work Rasmussen back into the Saturday role by regional time? It seems like Heimlich and Thompson are unstoppable, but Fehmel isn’t.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:08 Go Beavs

Aaron Fitt:

You know, Fehmel just doesn’t have overpowering stuff, so he really needs to be sharp to be successful. And he was very sharp for most of this season, but his margin for error is thinner than it is for a guy like Thompson, who has electric stuff. I feel like keeping Rasmussen in the bullpen is probably the right move going forward, but let’s see how Fehmel responds to this. If he really struggles the last few weeks of the regular season, I wouldn’t be shocked if they tried to stretch out Rasmussen for the postseason.

If Arkansas wins it’s final 3 series, big if with how they’ve played recently, do you think the Hogs will be hosting a regional?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:10 Jon B

Aaron Fitt:

That is indeed a big “if” because series vs. Vandy and at Texas A&M will be challenging, but Arkansas is also capable of doing it. And yes, if they win those last three series, there’s no question they will host. They could still very well host by winning two of their last three — which would probably get them to 18-12 in the SEC. Most SEC teams that go 18-12 wind up hosting.

Thoughts on the Gamecocks postseason position after 5 series losses? Holbrook’s future in jeopardy?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:13 Jay

Kendall Rogers:

Jay — Aaron and I talked about this last night, and while we still ultimately think the Gamecocks will get into the postseason, it’s certainly not crystal clear when you look at conference record, remaining schedule and more. I do believe Chad Holbrook will be back for another year, but we will see. Lots of factors at play here.

[Comment From TTUTTU: ]

Do ya’ll think that the absence of Davis Martin has been putting more pressure on this bullpen than anticipated? Most of our conference losses have come from not being able to close out the last 6ish outs. Im wondering if the need to use more of our bullpen on Fridays is causing issues for the rest of the weekend. Hopefully we will have Martin back for the post-season, but its still concerning to be losing games in the 8th and 9th innings. Walks have been a HUUGE issue!

Monday May 1, 2017 1:14 TTU

Aaron Fitt:

There’s no question that losing a workhorse ace like Martin increases the pressure on the bullpen. Lanning is good once through the lineup, but after that he seems to run out of gas or get figured out, so Tech has had to go to the bullpen earlier than it would like on Fridays. These five-game weeks also tax the bullpen quite a bit, and Tech has another one coming up. That’s an unfortunate fact of life when you’re geographically isolated like Tech — you can’t just play a game every Tuesday because it’s so hard to get anywhere, so you wind up scheduling all these two-game midweek sets in order to make the travel worthwhile. But that taxes a pitching staff. Nonetheless — I really liked what I saw from Parker Mushinski and Caleb Kilian in Game Two. McMillon obviously has huge stuff and is a real weapon in the bullpen. Patterson is a really nice quality lefty who can go multiple innings. I saw Quezada in week one and he’s got good stuff. So they’ve got plenty of depth there, and I think they’re going to be in very good shape in the postseason.

Do the Canes have any shot to make a regional outside of winning ACC Tourney?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:15 T

Kendall Rogers:

T — The Hurricanes are above .500 in the ACC now (12-11), but the RPI is still sitting at 72 and the Canes are 12-17 vs. RPI Top 100. I’m still not seeing the ultimate postseason path right now, but they do finish with Bethune-Cookman (home), VT (home) and Virginia (on the road). That UVA series could be very very telling for UM. that’s a must-win series right now.

TA&M started conference play 1-5, now they’re 13-8. Do y’all think they could make a push for the SEC regular season title? How far do you see them going in the postseason?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:17 Kovach19

Kendall Rogers:

Kovach — No reason to think A&M can’t win the SEC regular season title considering its knocking on the door (with six other teams in the mix, too). The big key for the Aggies is that Stephen Kolek has been outstanding in the No. 3 spot as of late, while Corbin Martin has excelled in the starting role. The Aggies also have a two-headed monster in the bullpen in Kaylor Chafin and Mitchell Kilkenny. Still don’t think the Aggies have an offense to be scared of — but the pitching is really coming around.

Hey guys, what are the Ducks chances of getting into the post season?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:17 Jake

Aaron Fitt:

hmm… 50/50. Right now they need to bolster their resume a bit, because No. 61 in the RPI and 8-10 in the Pac is not a winning combination. They got in with a low-60s RPI a few years ago because they won their last five series and finished 16-14 in the Pac, but they were probably the last team in the field. So they need to get that RPI up some, and they need to finish around .500 in the conference. They’re certainly capable of doing those things, but the remaining schedule isn’t exactly a cake walk: at Wazzu and at USC are winnable road series, but they’re far from gimmes, especially on the road. And Oregon State and UCLA go to Eugene — not easy home series.

It’s been an interesting year in the Southland Conference- your two favorites are both having nice campaigns, while McNeese seems to be one of those clubs anchored into the RPI top 30 with one single loss outside the top 100. That being said, SLU has a nice 13-7 record vs the top 100 with 8 of their final 11 games also inside that number. If they can sneak into the top 3 of the SLC standings and maintain a top 40ish RPI, do you think they can receive a second consecutive at-large bid?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:18 Lion

Kendall Rogers:

Lion — I could see it happening, though, I tend to think the SLC is a two-bid league if McNeese doesn’t win the conference tournament (and the team who wins it isn’t SLU). I do think Southeastern is a solid club. It has a bonafide ace in Mac Sceroler and guys such as Carson Crites are really solid players.

A few Pac 12 questions: What do the Ducks need to do to make the field of 64? How many bid league is the Pac? Can either Stanford or Arizona host?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:22 Bob

Kendall Rogers:

Bob — Oregon’s conference record and RPI needs help, but the Ducks have some big RPI opportunities left on the board — namely that Oregon State series at home. The Ducks could be a nemesis if they can just find a way to make a regional. As for the league as a whole, I think it’s a six-bid type of league, and Stanford is absolutely a host this week IMO, barring me being overruled in the NerdCast. Arizona has work to do, IMO.

Texas Tech’s true freshmen go for 11 hits, 11 runs and 11 RBI’s in game 3 against TCU………… Is there a better performing freshman class this year? Does this mean a bunch of early MLB draft picks or is there a dynasty being built in Lubbock?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:26 Keith

Aaron Fitt:

I wrote about those freshmen in detail today in my column from Lubbock — check it out! It’s a really special freshman class, there’s no doubt about it. Jung and McMillon strike me as the guys who are real premium pro talents, but Berglund is also really intriguing, and Grant Little surprised me with the pop he showed yesterday. If he keeps getting stronger, he could be an interesting prospect, because he’s a good athlete with a quality approach.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:27 Big12Fan

Kendall Rogers:

Big 12 – Right now, I feel very very good about TCU and Texas Tech as national seeds, so those are obviously two. I think West Virginia is slipping at the moment, though. The case for those guys as a host site this week isn’t as easy as it once was (7-10 vs. RPI Top 50), etc…. Keep an eye on Texas if the Longhorns can take that road series from TCU this weekend.

Do you still think the sun belt is a one bid league?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:28 Jake

Kendall Rogers:

Jake — I do right now. I think one of ULL/Coastal/USA will get into the field. The issue I run into with Coastal and USA? The Jags are 2-10 vs. RPI Top 50 and Coastal is 2-7 with an RPI in the 60s. I suppose I could see the Jags and Cajuns getting in right now, but Coastal still has a lot of work to do. For the record, I think all three of those clubs are postseason caliber … but sometimes there’s simply not enough room.

Where do Devon Hairston and Drew Ellis project in the draft? Also, where does Hairston rank among SSs?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:32 Logan

Aaron Fitt:

They’re both gonna go pretty good; I have a feeling Ellis goes higher, because that bat is legit, and he really projects physically. Maybe a top-two-rounds type guy? I’m speculating a bit there, haven’t talked with a scout specifically about him. Hairston is just so reliable defensive, and that consistency will be valued. He is undersized, and he’s a below-average runner, so those things will keep him from being a really high-round pick, but I feel like he still fits in that 3-5 round range.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:33 Steven

Aaron Fitt:

I can’t speak for anybody else, but it really is remarkable just how consistently I’ve been wrong about Auburn. And I LIKE Auburn! It’s just that they’ve had so many tough series where it felt like the other team had an edge for one reason or another, and yet the Tigers just keep on finding ways to win series. It is really impressive.

Is UCLA getting close to being a top 25 team/ do they have a shot at a 2 seed in a regional or are they more on the outside looking in still?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:37 Greg D.

Aaron Fitt:

At 21-19, they’ve still got a ways to go to gain Top 25 consideration — just need more separation from that .500 mark. But Kendall and I both do like the direction they have been trending in for the last six weeks or so, and I think we both believe the Bruins will be in a regional — but the smart money is probably on them being a 3 seed. If they finish hot, they could certainly still play themselves up to that 2-line, however. Four weeks to go — plenty of time to make a move like that. But the Pac-12 is just rugged, everybody is beating up on each other, so I don’t expect UCLA to make the kind of run that would be necessary to reach that 2-line.

Thoughts on Cory Abbott and LMU? Lions have yet to lose a weekend series and Cory is putting together a pretty incredible season.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:40 Cody

Aaron Fitt:

He really is — now he’s got a perfect game AND a 15-strikeout game against a USD team that can really swing the bats. He’s got really good stuff — a 91-93 fastball, a swing-and-miss curveball and also a power slider that he’s added this year. That Arriaga-Abbot tandem is pretty formidable atop that rotation, and Redman is a solid Sunday guy, which helps explain why the Lions have not lost a weekend series yet this year.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:42 JT

How is the Wcc race shaping up, and how many bids out of the league?

Monday May 1, 2017 1:47 Alex

Aaron Fitt:

You know, it probably still winds up as a one-bid league, but I think two bids is very much within reach. Problem is nobody is currently inside the top 50 of the RPI, but five teams are between 50-76 (LMU, BYU, Gonzaga, USD, St. Mary’s), and those are also the top five teams in the standings, which helps quite a bit. Honestly I think those are all regional-caliber clubs, but the RPI reality will keep the WCC from getting more than two, I suspect. At this point, I think LMU has earned the benefit of the doubt as the front-runner — like I said, they haven’t lost a series yet, and their nonconference schedule was pretty solid too.

Hey guys you do a great job! How big is winning that mid-week game vs Clemson going to be in order to try to help that awful RPI? Would you consider pitching Cunningham? Besides Cunningham the pitching has been awful. Bilious has a lot of potential, but is a disappointment. He can’t complete 3 innings and bullpen is not good. By the 3rd game of a series the pen and starters are depleted. After winning the CWS I would think this is the time the recruits should be excellent for CCU. Do they have the talent they need I would think you need to recruit now if your going to become a consistent power. Does CCU need to win the average SunBelt the way it looks? Thanks guys.

Monday May 1, 2017 1:53 Brad

Aaron Fitt:

That Clemson game is certainly very important, considering Coastal is just 2-7 against the top 50, so they need every high-end win they can get — and that’s the only team left on their schedule with an RPI inside the top 90. But really, this team just doesn’t seem like it’s going to get an at-large bid this year — it’s gonna come down to the conference tournament. And I think you are right to raise concerns about the pitching beyond Cunningham. I also thought Bilous was going to have a breakout year, and it just hasn’t happened. He has so much upside, just hasn’t been able to figure out the command.

With an RPI of No. 11 and a 14-10 conference mark and two winnable series remaining — yes, I think Virginia is playing itself into that national seed mix. Noles — I think FSU is pretty safe at this juncture with an RPI in the 20s. But, I do have some slight concerns about the remaining schedule with 245 Pacific at home this weekend (the RPI will fall by just playing those guys) and very losable weekend series left against Wake Forest and Louisville. The sweep is nice, but still work to do with a 25-20 overall record, average RPI and losing conference record. The Pack needs to win that Pitt series on the road and pull off an upset against Clemson to bolster the resume. What are the chances Carolina can jump Oregon State in the national seed conversation? Carolina seems to have better metrics and play a tougher schedule.

Monday May 1, 2017 2:04 Joe

Aaron Fitt:

UNC has had an incredible season, but I don’t think its metrics are better than Oregon State’s. Beavers are ahead in the RPI (1 vs. 2). Beavers are 10-0 top 50, UNC is 16-5 — so more games for the Tar Heels, but 10-0 is pretty good…. and Oregon State is 23-3 vs. the top 100, compared with 24-8 for UNC. I mean, they both have No. 1 national seed resumes, so it just depends on how they finish. If the Beavers lose a couple of series and the Tar Heels don’t, UNC could certainly jump them. How neat would it be to see a UNC-Oregon State matchup for the national title for the third time since 2006?

What does #20 Southern Miss (34-12, RPI 21) have to do to host a regional?

Kendall Rogers:

TTT — I think Southern Miss will end up having a very intriguing case to host. The RPI is up to 21, it could very well win the regular season Conference USA crown and the remaining schedule is extremely favorable w/ FAU, UAB and UTSA left. Those are all three series the Golden Eagles should win. Win 2/3 the rest of the way and beat SELA in that midweek game and you are looking at 41-15 with a 22-8 league record. That’d be pretty loud in a solid league like Conference USA.

Hey guys…what are your keys for the Aggies to compete to host as they enter a key three-series stretch to close out the regular season?

Kendall Rogers:

Chris — A&M probably needs to win the three remaining series to host a regional, and that’s doable with Mississippi State and Arkansas at home. Win those two and take 2/3 from Ole Miss on the road, and you’d have hard-pressed to deny a host site. That would be an SEC record of 19-11. Pretty good. Long way to go, though.

Any word on when Cal State Fullerton pitcher Colton Eastman will return?

Kendall Rogers:

The word is he’ll be back pretty soon. We’ll see what happens. That would absolutely be a game-changer for the Titans entering the postseason.
