Coaching Buzz: Updating Oakland, Pacific And Charleston Southern

Coaching Buzz

The college baseball coaching carousel might be abbreviated this summer for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some intriguing openings garnering our attention.

UAB was the latest program to enter the coaching carousel mix, but the Blazers, at least for now, will not undergo a lengthy search for a new head coach. Instead, with long-time head coach Brian Shoop announcing his retirement late Sunday night, the Blazers have promoted long-time assistant Perry Roth to the head coach role. Roth had been with Shoop during his entire tenure at UAB. And though the school announced the interim tag is for the rest of this year and the 2021 campaign, sources indicate the head coach tag likely will stick. We’ll see how things transpire over the next few months.

Another head coaching that has come open over the past couple of weeks is Chicago State, which is an incredibly difficult job. CSU parted ways with long-time head coach Steve Joslyn, who struggled during his tenure with the program. However, it must be stated that CSU faces some serious challenges. In addition to being in the WAC as a school in Chicago, the program also has some financial commitment changes.

In terms of coaching searches with new scoop and information, we’re focused on Oakland, Pacific and Charleston Southern. Oakland is well down the road in its coaching search with an intriguing quartet of finalists, while Pacific has trimmed its list and Charleston Southern is still in the name-canvassing portion of its coaching search.

Without further ado, let’s get down to the scoop:
