One is going home. One is going to the favorite’s role. And two are going to fight it out in the loser’s bracket. Day three of the College World Series saw Florida State eliminate Cal State Fullerton and Oregon State whitewash LSU to become the first team to reach the 2-0 mark in TD Ameritrade Park.
But the biggest word of the day was “Walk.”
The Cal State Fullerton Titans and the LSU Tigers both walked their opposing batters so much, as Rick Vanderhook said in the post-game press conference, “Our players are going back to California with a nice suntan because we were out in the field for so long.”
In the Titans’ 6-4 loss to Florida State, their pitchers issued eight free bases and one hit batsman. They also gave up a pair of bases-loaded walks to account for the winning margin as part of a three-run seventh inning.
Meanwhile, in the night cap, LSU pitchers gave the Oregon State Beavers 12 free jaunts to first base. Of course, it didn’t matter as much because the Beavers also notched 11 hits, including K.J. Harrison’s sonic four-run blast in the sixth inning to make this game a no-brainer.
What did all this look like through the camera lens? Here are a few of the better ones…
GAME FIVE – 2017 College World Series Florida State – 6 Cal State Fullerton – 4
The Big West Monsters will be going home with their ninth straight loss in Omaha, dropping a nip-and-tuck decision to Florida State.
A view point you don’t get too often, here is Florida State catcher Cal Raleigh about to hunker down for some in-between inning warmups. Yes, bask in the glory of the College World Series, StitchHeads.
Tough play.Fullerton’s Hunter Cullen just misses a foul ball into the stands. Painfully, instead of making this a third out, the Titans saw FSU score three more runs that inning.
… and this is how Cullen ended up in the stands down the right field line.
The Noles’ six-hole hitter had to look back to make sure the ball was NOT caught. He went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the sixth inning and a pair of walks. It was his ninth home run of the season.
FSU outfielder JC Flowers goes all scorpion-like, in a failed attempt to make a diving catch in center field.
Fullerton pinch-hitter Hank LoForte gets rung up in the final at-bat for the Titans in 2017. With men on first and second, this was not the way the Titan dynamo wanted to have his last at-bat end.
The Titans show all the emotions of having their season come to an end. Still, as head coach Rick Vanderhook did proudly point out this was the second time in three years that the Titans ended their season in Omaha. “It’s tough enough just to get to Omaha. It’s even harder to win once you get here.” he said.
Nice scene. The Titans turn around and salute their fans after meeting in front of their dugout after the game.
Billy Bluejay, the Creighton mascot, won a footrace between the three D1 schools in the state; CU, Nebraska and UNO. He celebrated his victory with a finish line flip.
GAME SIX – 2017 College World Series
OREGON STATE – 13
LSU – 1
Yes, that score is not a typo. Just like OSU’s 56-4 record, you have to wipe your eyes twice before believing what you’re reading.
That time when you have an angry Beaver standing behind you giving you the stink-eye.
After Beau Jordon struck out, Josh Smith tried to steal third but came up snake-eyes against that at-the-ready Oregon State defense.
Fehmel looked so good tonight he was like a beacon in the darkness for the Beavers.
Last week after the Super Regional wins over Vanderbilt, Coach Pat Casey told me “I really don’t tell these guys anything, at this time of the season they are pretty much on their own.” I guess it’s true, as witnessed by coach Casey sitting by himself on the bench like he’s a pitcher throwing a no-hitter.
Bryce Fehmel put out his second straight stellar outing, coming on the heels of his Super Regional-sealing five-hitter vs. Vanderbilt. Fehmel ended the night giving up just two hits and three walks with three Ks AND getting this cool, heroic shot of him coming out of the dugout in the seventh inning.
This was the swing that swung the game. K.J. Harrison cranks out a screamer to left field with the bases stacked with Beavers.
K.J. Harrison round third on his way to home on his grand slam. It was also just the second grand slam at the College World Series since 2001.
The only light of the night for the Tigers was Zach Watson’s solo shot in the seventh inning. Watson went 2-for-4 on the night.
LSU’s Paul Mainieri gives his boys a much-needed post-game pep talk. As he pointed out in the press conference, last year Coastal Carolina lost its second game of the CWS and still won the whole enchilada. So it’s not impossible.
Sophomore Bryce Fehmel gives the adoring OSU fans a wave after his tour de force on the mound in Omaha tonight.
K.J. Harrison also gets the hero calls after slamming a four-run homer to put this game on ice.
. TODAY’S TOP SONG ON THE TD AMERITRADE PARK P.A. BETWEEN INNINGS
Whoever is responsible for the songs played during or between games should be proud of themselves. Today’s tastiest tidbit went to Audiosoave’s sonic song “Cochise” featuring the late Chris Cornell and his five-octave vocals:
