Paul Mainieri choked back the tears as he spoke to a reporter this past Friday, just hours before a 1-0 win over the Georgia Bulldogs.

“I’ve been getting better,” said Mainieri, his voice cracking.

Mainieri, LSU’s head coach and the man who directed the Tigers to the 2009 national championship, lost his father, Demie “Doc” Mainieri on March 13.
