ColumnsMACON, Ga. — There were several moments during Wofford’s series-clinching 5-0 win at Mercer on Saturday that perfectly captured the unique essence of Terrier baseball.
The most obvious example came in the top of the seventh, with Wofford nursing a 3-0 lead. Stocky 5-foot-10, 190-pound catcher Lawson Hill was at first base, and burly 5-11, 200-pound first baseman John Dempsey was at third, with cleanup man Ryan Galanie at the plate and two outs. For almost any other program, this situation called for a conventional approach — just let the cleanup man try to drive in an insurance run.
