Off The Top Of My HeadColumns
Ahhhhh, here we are. We’ve made it to the month of May, StitchHeads. The month that all those April showers had brought us, right? Well let me be the first to say, Happy Cinco De Mayo guys and gals. (Yes, I realize I am posting this on May 4th, but I couldn’t bare to bring myself to calling it the “May The Fourth Be With You Edition”. I would just want to punch myself for that.). Grab your Mexican wrestling masks and slam a shot of tequila. You’ve made it this far. Congratulations.
But beware, May is the cruelest month of any in the college baseball season. I’m talkin’, off-the-top-rope cruel. May doesn’t care. It’ll pull the DDT on you, Jake the Snake style. Cruel but fair. The month of May doesn’t give a rat’s arse over your incessant whining about how your little team deserves to have its season extended because they’ve “worked so hard” or “are such good kids.” Poppycock!
So buck up D1 college baseball teams. You’ve got a month of your season left… except for the lucky few who don’t let anything jitter their nerves.
Now, as for this weekend? Believe it or not, it’s a fairly BLAH weekend. Only Mississippi State-Texas A&M and Texas-TCU are matchups of Top 25 teams. There are some good rivalry games: Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn and UCLA-USC, but those just seem like good football matchups right now. Not as hot on the baseball side.
Anyway, let’s get to what’s jumping off the top of my head…
THE LAZARUS EFFECT.
This 2017 season has been a weird one. Some teams that got out to awful starts to their seasons and appeared to be dead in the water have managed to wiggle their way back to life and into the post-season discussion. Just goes to show that sometimes all it takes is a little time for a team to gel and start reaching its potential. I think we’ve got Utah of 2016 as the poster child for that. Here are the teams that had fallen on hard times earlier but now are going to make some noise.
– Mississippi State
Record: 30-16, 14-7 SEC
RPI: No. 17
Lowest Point: On March 21st the Bulldogs were 12-10 and 84th in the RPI
Why They’re Back: By the working of a miracle
I don’t know HOW the Bulldogs are doing it, but these guys are on fire. And this all comes despite a rash of injuries. But they have Brent Rooker. You know, the dude who is hitting .413 with 19 home runs. Mr. Rooker has spearheaded an 18-6 tear that now finds the ‘Dogs tied for first place in the SEC West with Auburn. If they stay strong there is plenty of reasons we could see Cow Bells at a home Regional in StarkVegas in June.
