Fall Report: Florida StateFall Report
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Mike Martin is never going to damn his team with excessive praise in the preseason. Over the course of 37 years as Florida State’s head coach, Martin has mastered the art of motivation, and that means he’s careful not to let his club get too big for its collective britches. There’s always something that can be improved.
But under the surface, it’s easy to detect a quiet confidence from Martin about his latest batch of Seminoles. Call it a gleam in his eye, if you like. The 2017 Seminoles have a chance to be one of the best teams of Martin’s illustrious tenure.
After last week’s scrimmage against the Ontario Blue Jays, Martin went to considerable lengths to emphasize his team’s mistakes and the various areas where it needs to improve. And then he slid in this little chestnut: “I just like this baseball club. I like the makeup of ’em.”
There’s a lot to like beyond the makeup, but that’s certainly a good place to start.
