The D1Baseball Field of 64

It’s Memorial Day —but if you’re anything like us, you probably think of it as “Selection Monday.” Of course, there will be no NCAA tournament field of 64 selection show today, so we decided to do what we could to simulate the selection experience.

The season was canceled after just four weeks, so we’ll never know how it would have played out. But we convened our own mock Division I Baseball Committee — composed of Aaron Fitt, Kendall Rogers and Mark Etheridge — to construct our own field of 64, based on how we believe the 2020 regular season would have played out.

For this exercise, we took into account what we learned over the first four weeks of the season and attempted to forecast how the rest of the season would have played out if the COVID-19 pandemic had not struck. So that means we had to decide if we thought a surprise team that raced out to a hot start was for real, or simply a product of a soft nonconference schedule.

We debated the merits of the contenders in every conference in our committee meeting, which we recorded and posted as a special edition of the D1Baseball Nerdcast, which you can listen to below. We know it’s not the same as a real Selection Show, but we hope it whets a little bit of your appetite for baseball talk on this Memorial Day.
