Etheridge: The appearance of impropriety can be as damaging as the real thing


Even if everything was done absolutely impeccably, this is a bad look.

Realignment has been the prevailing wind throughout college athletics as universities scramble to better their own position, often to the detriment of the sport at large. Rivalries have ended. Student-athletes travel cross-country for conference games, primarily because each entity is inwardly focused as opposed to the altruistic viewpoint required to be impartial.

We now expect everyone to look out for themselves. No one should be surprised if this perception carries over to how the selection committee is viewed.
