Area Code Games: Day 2 StandoutsPremium
The 2018 high school draft class is beginning to take shape, and as is the case every August, the Area Code Games are once again serving as important proving grounds for the top amateur talent in the nation. Scouts and college coaches from around the nation have once again descended on Blair Field in Long Beach, California as they look to sharpen their evaluations and perhaps uncover more talent.
The event kept rolling on Monday, as a packed house of scouts settled in for four more teams of batting practice, followed by three games of top prospect action. There were a number of intriguing highlights, including some standout pitching performances and a number of top flight hitting performances. Here’s a look at some of the standout performers from day two.
Bobby Witt Jr., ss, Colleyville, Texas | Conmitment: Oklahoma
A young man who, at this moment, holds the title of most talked-about 2019 high school draft prospect in the country, Bobby Witt Jr. took the field with a lot of very curious eyes thoroughly fixed upon him. After his round of batting practice at Blair Field on Monday it’s easy to see why he has scouts so excited already about their opportunity to nab him in the 2019 draft. Witt put on one of the loudest batting practice displays among the eight teams here and that’s saying a lot considering he’s only among a handful of 2019 graduates in attendance. The righty swinging infielder has outstanding, plus bat speed and the ball was leaping off his barrel to center and left center field. He showed easy power generated out of his wiry, strong 6-foot-1 frame and hit some towering, low effort home runs to left-center.
