Midseason Report: Field Of 64 Projections
Projections
PODCAST: Midseason Projections NerdCast
ANALYSIS: Mark Etheridge on early postseason trends
It’s hard to believe, but we’re already at the midseason point of the 2022 college baseball season. That means it’s time for our Midseason Projected Field of 64.
In this exercise, we consider two things: how we perceive teams from a resume standpoint right now, along with how we feel teams will finish the season.
Let’s dive into the projections.
To no surprise, Tennessee is the top national seed in our midseason projections. The Volunteers have the nation’s top RPI and possess a ridiculously impressive 10-1 record against RPI Top 25 teams. Arkansas is another SEC team in our top eight, while the ACC, Big 12 and Pac 12 each have two teams in the top eight as well. Virginia and Miami headline the ACC, Texas Tech and Texas headline the Big 12 and Arizona and UCLA narrowly edged out Oregon State for a top eight seed.
As for the rest of the host sites, the SEC added two more representatives in Georgia and Vanderbilt, while the ACC also added two more with Notre Dame and Louisville both playing at a high level so far this spring.
In terms of conference bids to the postseason, the ACC leads the way with 10, while the SEC comes in right behind with nine bids. Mississippi State, the defending national champion, was the final SEC team to make the field, while the Big 12 has six of its nine teams in the field with West Virginia the final team in the field from the league. Baylor was right on the cusp of the field. The Pac 12 has five teams in the field, the Big Ten has three and five leagues have two teams — Big West, Conference USA, SoCon, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference.
The tournament field is compiled by D1Baseball resident bracket expert Mark Etheridge, along with managing editors Kendall Rogers and Aaron Fitt.
