Area Code Games: Day 1 Standouts


The 2018 high school draft class is beginning to take shape, and as is the case every August, the Area Code Games are once again serving as important proving grounds for the top amateur talent in the nation. Scouts and college coaches from around the nation have once again descended on Blair Field in Long Beach, California as they look to sharpen their evaluations and perhaps uncover more talent.

The event kicked off on Sunday, as a packed house of scouts settled in for four teams of batting practice and the three games of top prospect action. There were a number of intriguing highlights, including some standout pitching performances and a number of top flight hitting performances. Here’s a look at some of the standout performers from day one.

Mike Vasil, rhp, Wellesley, Mass. | Commitment: Virginia

There was a sense headed into the day that Mike Vasil might deliver something special for scouts when he took the mound for the Yankees’ Area Code squad. That sense proved to be more than accurate, as the 6-foot-4 righthander tossed five shutout frames and fanned five batters along the way. And while the line score looks impressive, it was how he accomplished it that truly stood out.
