Area Code Games: Day 3 StandoutsProspects
The 2018 high school draft class is beginning to take shape, and as is the case every August, the Area Code Games are once again serving as important proving grounds for the top amateur talent in the nation. Scouts and college coaches from around the nation have once again descended on Blair Field in Long Beach, California as they look to sharpen their evaluations and perhaps uncover more talent.
The event kept rolling on Tuesday, as a packed house of scouts settled in for five games of top prospect action. There were a number of intriguing highlights, including some standout pitching performances and a number of top flight hitting performances. Here’s a look at some of the standout performers from day three.
Xavier Edwards, ss, Wellington, Fla. | Commitment: Vanderbilt
If you’ve watched Xavier Edwards play more than a game or two you know all about his defensive prowess and athleticism. If you’ve seen him run, you also know he has elite level speed. But what’s made Xavier Edwards so compelling this week at the Area Code Games is that he’s driving the baseball and doing damage at the plate, along with impressing in those usual facets. The switch hitting 5-foot-10 infielder has impressed all week on both sides of the ball and dazzled scouts with a blistering 3.88 home to first time on a grounder on Monday night. In Tuesday’s action, he showed that he’s continue to improve when it comes to generating power. Edwards crushed a ball from the left side that nearly left spacious Blair Field in right, and he cruised into third base with a booming triple. Edwards is an extremely smart hitter from both sides and knows how to use his speed, but he’s shown he has high level bat speed and the ability to generate some legitimate pop as well.
