Kolten Smith emerges as secret weapon of Georgia pitching staff

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Georgia found itself in a pickle in the first inning of Thursday’s series opener against South Carolina.

Its lineup had put up four runs in the top of the first inning, sure, but Bulldogs starter Jarvis Evans had given up three runs already in the bottom half and the Gamecocks had runners on second and third with one out.

Sensing the importance of the moment even in the first inning of a game that had a real chance to be extremely high scoring, Georgia head coach Wes Johnson turned to righthander Kolten Smith to settle things down.
