College Prospect Notebook: Week One

Each week, our College Prospect Notebook will highlight and detail some of the most intriguing prospects performances from around the nation. Prospects will be cited based on their significance in the scouting world, as well as how their performance could impact their draft stock moving forward. Players from all draft classes will be discussed, from freshman 2018 draft prospects right on through to this year’s 2016 class.

After each weekend, we will gather insight from professional scouts from around the nation, as well as from coaches and staff first-hand accounts. From this, we will bring you the latest on what college baseball has to offer to the future of the professional baseball and draft universe.

Here’s a look at some of the prospects that scouts are talking about after week one of the college baseball season.

• Connor Jones (Virginia, 2016) emerged as one of the most consistent starting pitchers in college baseball since the start of 2015, and if early indications carry through this spring, he looks poised to cement himself as a potential top five overall pick in the 2016 draft. Jones will likely build more velocity as the spring moves along, but he was still razor sharp on Friday for the Cavaliers. He cruised over seven shutout, seemingly effortless innings and carried his stuff like a season pro. Jones lived at 91-93 mph with heavy sink throughout his outing, touching 95 on a couple radar guns. His 85-88 mph splitter is becoming more of a major weapon as well. He threw four pitches consistently for strikes and only went to one three-ball count. Jones is going to continue spinning gems like this all spring, and it won’t surprise a single onlooker. But just exactly how much he can elevate his raw stuff as the weather warms will determine just how high his draft stock can climb.
