CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina coach Mike Fox said he had a lot of time this summer to think about what changes he wanted to make in his program. In fact, with UNC missing out on the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001, he had more time to reflect than usual.

Fox said that one of his team’s big shortcomings in 2015 was a lack of leadership, so he made the decision to name two captains, without consulting the players. His two choices were juniors Zac Gallen and Adam Pate.
