OMAHA — Stanford righthanded pitcher Brendan Beck couldn’t have been better … until his team had two outs in the ninth inning.

With the Cardinal clinging to a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning, Stanford head coach Dave Esquer turned the game over to Beck, who has been outstanding the entire season, and especially in the NCAA tournament. Stanford reliever Jacob Palisch walked the leadoff hitter, and it was Beck’s turn to put out the fire.
