Summer Breakout Prospect: Kevin SmithFeatured
By the time he finished leading the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to their third straight Cape Cod League championship this summer, Kevin Smith was officially a bona fide big league prospect. He tied for the Cape League lead with 12 doubles while ranking 13th in batting (.301) and playing superb defense at shortstop. He made the all-star team in the prestigious league and established himself as a potential first- or second-round pick in the 2017 draft.
And that’s quite a leap, considering where Smith was in high school — an undersized and largely overlooked baseball rat in upstate New York — or even where he was this spring, after his up-and-down sophomore season at Maryland. But through his diligent work on and off the field in the Cape, Smith boosted his stock as much this summer as any player in college baseball, earning him D1Baseball’s 2016 Summer Breakout Prospect award.
“He didn’t use it as a vacation — go up to Cape Cod and hang out on the beach all day. I know that’s not what he did,” Maryland coach John Szefc said. “That was two months’ worth of work. And I think he established himself as a real prospect going into his junior year, which is I think what any junior wants to be.”
