Florida seems to be in good shape for a national seed. What would have to happen vs Kentucky and in Hoover for them to lose it?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:09 Larry

Kendall Rogers:

Larry — Florida would have to pretty much crud the bed against UK and then scuffle in Hoover to have a chance to lose a national seed. Right now, the Gators have very good across the board metrics and lead the league by one game. Basically, the Gators would need to get swept this weekend. (Don’t see that happening).

Can Troy receive an at large bid if they beat Miss. State but not win the sunbelt tourney?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:10 ssfreeman

Kendall Rogers:

Not happening with an RPI of 111. Must win the conference tournament. That tourney is really fascinating with Coastal and South Alabama catching fire, and others like UTA and UL Lafayette playing good ball much of the spring.

Who will get a National Seed, Stanford or LSU or both?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:11 9 Time

Kendall Rogers:

9 Time — I feel pretty good about both of those teams if they take care of business the rest of the way in the regular season. LSU could get derailed if Kentucky takes that series from Florida on the road this weekend, but we’ll see. I think some results in Hoover will help determine who gets what as well.

[Comment From BenBen: ]

Obviously the SEC West is on the line in Starkville this weekend, but does State have to win the series to secure a host spot as well? RPI now down in the 24-25 range and a series loss here means they would have lost three of their last four series. Either way it’s a better season than most expected for Cannizaro and company, but it almost seems like an all or nothing kind of series in terms of winning the West and hosting.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:12 Ben

Kendall Rogers:

I think a series loss would certainly really cloud the hosting picture for the Bulldogs, but if they win the series over LSU (which I lean MSU this weekend), I think you have to give State a host site. What will be interesting to me is to see if State can go on a run in the SEC tournament and get back into the national seed discussion. I’d lean no, but never say never.

Do you think Gino DiMare is the right person to take over for Jim Morris (has one year left but hoping he leaves this year)? Or, is it best for Miami to do a National Search?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:15 Guest

Kendall Rogers:

I think Miami would be very wise to do a national search — that is a terrific job, but I have a good relationship with Gino and Gino is clearly a very good recruiter with strong connections in that area. I think Miami would be wise to take a very hard look at Mark Kingston as well.

[Comment From JosephJoseph: ]

if Ole Miss wins one game at Auburn are they in? Or do they need to win two?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:16 Joseph

Kendall Rogers:

Joseph – I think if Ole Miss won the Auburn series, it would have to feel pretty good about getting into the field of 64. However, lose the series, and then go 0-1 in the SEC tournament, and I think Ole Miss would need to hope there aren’t a barrage of upsets in conference tournaments, thus having a lot of “stolen” bids.

Has Wake secured there spot as a regional host after having a big road series win over FSU.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:16 Deacs22

Kendall Rogers:

I think as Fitt put it on the Podcast this morning, you can put it on the board. Wake will host. Top 10 RPI, very strong ACC record, impressive consistency. Good to go at Gene Hooks!

[Comment From IkeIke: ]

How can the uta mavericks get at large bid?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:17 Ike

Ike — I think UTA is a solid club and certainly has done well in conference play, but not getting an at-large bid of 90. Not happening.

[Comment From WoodytxWoodytx: ]

Any chance Southern Miss gets a national seed if they run the table? Obviously that would be hard to do but what are your thoughts?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:18 Woodytx

Kendall Rogers:

Woody — Nope, IMO. I really like Southern Miss’ resume as a regional host. However, when compared with the national seed contenders, the Eagles do leave a little something to be desired. One little example: USM has just one win (and game) against RPI Top 25. Stanford, our eight seed last week? 7 wins vs. RPI Top 25 alone.

[Comment From AugieAugie: ]

Arizona State’s incredible streak is officially over. Miami and Florida State also have other significant streaks that are in jeopardy. Will all 3 streaks end, this year? If so, which is the most significant?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:20 Augie

Kendall Rogers:

Augie — I am not confident at all FSU and Miami will get in. I think Miami has a slightly better chance given it finishes the regular season with Va Tech, but the Hurricanes need to sweep that series. If FSU gets swept or loses two of three this weekend, it would have a 13-16 or 12-17 ACC mark. That’s really tough to justify as a postseason team if you are the NCAA Committee.

[Comment From JoeJoe: ]

If A&M only wins one game against Arkansas this weekend will that be good enough to clinch a bid?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:20 Joe

Kendall Rogers:

Texas A&M is safe for the postseason. Lock’em in the field. The question now: Will A&M be a 2 or 3 seed, not that it really matters.

  Kendall Rogers

[Comment From NRNR: ]

Hey guys….who are your favorites for National Freshman of the Year?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:21 NR

I would lean Braden Shewmake at Texas A&M. Such an advanced hitter for his average, terrific bat, and an elite defender despite having a few errors here as of late.

Is Kansas a team to keep an eye on? They’ve got really impressive wins, but the RPI probably isn’t where it needs to be

Monday May 15, 2017 3:29 Arnold

Kendall Rogers:

Arnold – Great question. Kansas is at 58 right now. Win that Tech series, get to 13-11 in the league, and then do well in Oklahoma City — KU would have a terrific case at that point.

[Comment From MikeMike: ]

Do you see TCU missing out on a national seed? What has to happen for them to miss out on a Top 8?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:30 Mike

Kendall Rogers:

Mike — I still like TCU as a top eight seed. The Frogs are leading the No. 1 RPI conference and have a magic number of one. I don’t think anything changes at this point for the Frogs, but certainly worth keeping an eye on if they play bad at Cal and then scuffle in OKC.

With wins over LA Tech and McNeese last week are the Cajuns a lock for an at large bid out of the Sun Belt?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:33 Ragin Dad

Kendall Rogers:

Absolutely not. RPI is still not where it needs to be at this point, and Coastal and USA are both trending a little bit better directions. Have a feeling one or two teams from this league end up getting in — just not real sure which two of the there it will be at this point.

Does DBU have a chance at getting an at large bid if they win out and win some games in the conference tourney? They are 15-3 over the last 18 games and have been rolling.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:34 sportsfan10

Kendall Rogers:

Sports — Could, but the RPI is a little iffy at 57 and the overall resume isn’t great — 3-9 vs. RPI Top 50 is a really ugly number for a potential at-large team. DBU could make things pretty interesting if it rolls this weekend and then rolls through the conference tourney, also beating high RPI Missouri State. If that happens I’m very interested to see which direction the committee would go.

Why not rank UCF over ODU after ODU’s 2 losses?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:35 Owen Deao

Kendall Rogers:

Owen — ODU won a weekend series and that accounts for a vast majority of our thinking on rankings. With that said, the one team we really struggled with taking out was USF. Lost a weekend series (on the road), but scored 15 in a win over Florida in the midweek. Really hated to boot them, but felt OU, Nebraska and Missouri State all deserved to enter.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:36 RobertV

Kendall Rogers:

Yes, I’m told Nick Madrigal (hand) and KJ Harrison (ankle) are both doing well and there was not a need to X-ray Madrigal’s hand. I’m with you — I’m shocked it wasn’t a somewhat serious injury.

What happens if Missouri State finishes in the 16 in RPI but cant host because the Double A team will be in that weekend.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:50 LeftField

Kendall Rogers:

Left Field — Would just go on the road as a two seed. Missouri State is looking into a host site as we speak. I guess there IS the possibility of going somewhere out West (maybe Fullerton) as a 1 or something? We’ll find out soon.

Drew Rassmussen has entered the rotation for OSU. Is he here to stay? Can you recall other instances in which a generally successful team has replaced their weekend starter this late in the season?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:51 Drew Rassmussen has entered the rotation for OSU. Is he here to stay? Can you recall other instances in which a generally successful team has replaced their weekend starter this late in the season?

Kendall Rogers:

Drew — Yes, I think Rasmussen is there to stay. I bet OSU extends him out a few more pitches/innings this weekend, and then goes full strength with him in the ACU series before the regional in a few weeks.

[Comment From ACCbaseFanACCbaseFan: ]

NC State with another sweep in ACC play.. granted it was Va Tech and Pitt.. puts their ACC record back to over .500 at 14-13. They still need to win 2 out of 3 versus Clemson to get in?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:51 ACCbaseFan

Kendall Rogers:

ACC — That would certainly help. That would probably lock the Pack in for me. Lose the series and there clearly will be work to do in the ACC tournament to secure a bid, however.

  Kendall Rogers
3:52
[Comment From HuskerguyHuskerguy: ]

A longshot here, but: If Nebraska wins the regular season AND the B1G tourney, any chance they could host? Or do I need to put my pipe down?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:52 Huskerguy

Kendall Rogers:

Husker — Not happening with an RPI in the 40s right now. Just simply not enough time to get where they need to be from a hosting perspective.

  Kendall Rogers
3:53
[Comment From CharlieCharlie: ]

Is the WCC a one bid conference? Rpis are all outside the top 50.

Monday May 15, 2017 3:53 Charlie

Kendall Rogers:

Charlie — I think it’s a one-bid league right now, but I’d love to see the committee put in a second team. I think Gonzaga, LMU and BYU are all postseason caliber squads — I think just one (or two) gets in, however. I’d lean one.

  Kendall Rogers
3:53
[Comment From Fat SamFat Sam: ]

Alex Lange seems a bit too amped up this year compared to previous seasons (skulking around mound, staring down opposing batters). Do you think this has played into his less than expected results?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:53 Fat Sam

Kendall Rogers:

Fat — He’s actually staring down the umpire, not opposing hitters. I do think Lange’s mechanics are a little more violent this year, but he was outstanding over the weekend against Auburn. The FB was commanded after the first couple of innings, and he was on point with the curveball. If he does that the next few weeks, watch out!

[Comment From RoomieRoomie: ]

The Southland Conference, with a conference RPI of 11, looks as though it’ll come down to final regular season weekend to decide regular season champs. McNeese is in control of their own destiny. Southeastern Louisiana’s RPI is #27. With all that said, what’s your outlook for Southland teams post season chances and is it a multi-bid league?

Monday May 15, 2017 3:55 Roomie

Kendall Rogers:

Roomie — Still very good about the SLC being a two-bid league with McNeese State and SELA. McNeese going on the road against Creighton was an RPI booster. Back up to 37 after the weekend, and SELA looks good, too. Like both of those clubs. BTW, I heard good scoop on Mac Sceroler over the weekend. Was up to 93-94 last week, sitting 89-91 in the ninth. Keep an eye on him for the draft.

[Comment From HerbieHerbie: ]

How many bids do you see the Big 10 getting?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:12 Herbie

Herbie — I feel pretty good about Nebraska and Michigan right now. I still think Maryland is in, along with Indiana, but I think those two have a little less room for error this weekend and in the conference tournament.

[Comment From BrettBrett: ]

Would you rather see the NCAA seed regionals or remain paired based on proximity?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:14 Brett

Kendall Rogers:

Brett — The NCAA should seed things 1-16. Period. We are way past the days of needing to “regionalize” everything. Softball seeds 1-16 — yet, we don’t. Silly.

[Comment From Eric Captain MorganEric Captain Morgan: ]

When is Tristan Beck for Stanford expected to return?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:16 Eric Captain Morgan

[Comment From Eric Captain MorganEric Captain Morgan: ]

IS UCLA in trouble after losing 2 out of 3 to Washington State?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:19 Eric Captain Morgan

Kendall Rogers:

Good question, Eric. The Bruins have little room for error these final two weeks of the regular season — that’s for damned sure. Right now, the Bruins have an RPI of 59. Personally, I feel like UCLA’s conference record would warrant a postseason bid at the moment.

  Kendall Rogers
4:22
[Comment From Kurt SahrKurt Sahr: ]

The Pac-12 has three no brainers for selection to the tournament, then a whole lot of parity. Any chance the Pac-12 only gets three teams? Or is some combination of UCLA, Washington, and Utah likely to make it, even given their mediocre non-conference performance?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:22 Kurt Sahr

Kendall Rogers:

Kurt — I would say Arizona, UCLA, Oregon State and Stanford are in right now — I think Washington is very much on the bubble, but the Huskies do have some really nice series win, such as Baylor, among others. UW has a VERY small margin for error.

4:23
[Comment From ZachZach: ]

Better chance to get to Omaha if you had to pick one: Louisville or UNC?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:23 Zach

4:24
[Comment From PJPJ: ]

Clemson in danger of falling out of the hosting mix?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:24 PJ

Kendall Rogers:

I think Clemson is okay from a hosting mix this week, but the national seed is lost after the 0-3 showing against Louisville. The good news? Clemson isn’t dead yet for a top eight. Take care of NC State and roll through the conference tournament and that’s very much fair game.

[Comment From CarlCarl: ]

Almost identical resumes from UNC last year and FSU this year except UNC had double the amount of top 50 wins. Any chance FSU misses postseason?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:26 Carl

Kendall Rogers:

Carl – Absolutely, especially if FSU finishes with a league record of 13-16 or 12-17. If the Seminoles don’t win a game at LOU this weekend, I’m struggling to find a case for those guys to be in the postseason. Win one and I still think it’s incredibly iffy — probably leaning no.

4:27
[Comment From AugieX5AugieX5: ]

Starting to get a little worried about my Longhorns, sitting in 7th place in the Big 12. Good RPI and SOS but a sweep of West Virginia this weekend sure would make me feel better. Thoughts?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:27 AugieX5

Kendall Rogers:

Augie — If the Longhorns lost the WVU series and struggled in OKC, I could see a cause for concern. But I think they win that series and have the pitching to do some damage in OKC. I think Texas will get in and be dangerous as well. Really like that rotation with Cooper/Johnston/Kingham.

  Kendall Rogers
4:28
[Comment From JBJB: ]

Does Auburn go from top 10 to in danger of not making the tournament at all after the last two weekends? Do you often see a fall that sharp from a power conference team this late in the season?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:28 JB

Kendall Rogers:

JB — I think Auburn will end up getting in, but there’s no doubt it is trending a bad direction. The issue is two-fold: Auburn hit the ball hard against LSU, but had nothing to show for it, and Casey Mize/Keegan Thompson are pitching less than 100 percent. They desperately need those guys healthy in the SEC tournament and postseason.

  Kendall Rogers
4:31
[Comment From BrieBrie: ]

Any chance St Johns can host?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:31 Brie

Kendall Rogers:

Brie — St. John’s RPI has gone up in the past couple of weeks, getting up to 29 — but the resume is very weak with just two wins vs. RPI Top 50 and just a 5-3 mark vs. RPI Top 100. Plus, I don’t think St. John’s was nearly aggressive enough with its non-conference scheduling.

Has Louisville petty much locked up a national seed with the sweep of Clemson?

Sahid Valenzuela is off to a great start in Fullerton. His slashline is .344/.409/.400 as a true freshman. How high is his ceiling?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:33 eight26

Kendall Rogers:

Eight — Very high. You know, I remember when Hooky told me about Sahid during the fall. Said he was very under the radar, but really toolsy and had a bright future. He’s certainly contributing at a high level for the Titans.

[Comment From Ray TannerRay Tanner: ]

Obligatory Chad Holbrook question: Should he be fired or should he be fired?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:34 Ray Tanner

Kendall Rogers:

Not Ray Tanner — I’m going to let the season play out before I give my opinion, but there’s zero doubt something is awry in Columbia. I really like Chad Holbrook on a personal level, so I hope he figures it out, but the Gamecocks aren’t a postseason team if the season ended today.

Is there a scenario where the SEC can get 3 teams a national seed? Or does 1 get spit out in the conference tourney? Pretty tight race going on there…

Monday May 15, 2017 4:37 Richard Daigle

Kendall Rogers:

Richard — I think Louisville, North Carolina, Oregon State and Texas Tech are the stone cold locks for me. I would move Tech in there as well. So that gives you four spots with teams such as TCU, Florida, Stanford leading the way, with LSU, my next time after those three. I do think UK is still in the mix, however, along with potentially Virginia (long shot).

What do you say to the fans that want Rob Childress out at Texas A&M because of his lack of success in Omaha?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:40 Robert

Kendall Rogers:

Sheer ridiculousness given what Rob has done with that team this year. Lost double-digit guys to the draft and still having the potential to win 40 games and be in the postseason yet again? The Aggies probably should have won the MSU and Ole Miss series (late errors cost them), but still, a solid season for those guys. Intrigued to see how they do in the postseason because I think they could surprise.

Kendall Rogers:

I liked Michigan’s club a lot when I was up in Ann Arbor not too long ago. I like that offense, too with Drew Lugbauer, Aka Thomas and some others as some quality hitters, too. I think Erik Bakich has a very very solid club.

I know there’s still a ton of baseball left to be played, but do you have a favorite, or more than one, who you predict to win it all this year?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:45 Keith

Kendall Rogers:

Keith — I know you are going to say, “Well, Duh! Way to go out on a limb, Rogers!” — But Oregon State has all the hallmarks of a national title team. Great defense? Check. Great starting pitching? Check. Solid bullpen? Check. Offense? More than good enough. And I think the Beavs matchup really well with that ballpark in Omaha. Outside of the Beavs? I like Texas Tech, assuming my man Davis Martin is healthy in the postseason.

[Comment From RaiderSeymoreRaiderSeymore: ]

Texas Tech is scheduled to get Davis Martin back soon and could be close to 100% to close the year. With TCU losing Luken Baker this weekend, what team in the Big 12 would you not want to play in a Regional? TCU in Ft. Worth, or Texas Tech at full strength in Lubbock?

Monday May 15, 2017 4:46 RaiderSeymore

All three of those guys will be gone, IMO, though Rasmussen would return if he thinks he’ll get a bigger pay day next year (I think he’ still gone). The good news for OSU is that there’s some serious potential with that young crop, too, with Jake Mulholland, Grant Gambrell and some others.

Should College Baseball get an NIT like College Basketball?

Kendall Rogers:

Paul — My postseason field would actually be getting rid of regionals and making it ALL three-game series the entire way through the postseason. That’d allow a lot of teams that wouldn’t usually host a regional host an actual part of the postseason – i.e., increase interest.

Hey guys! What do think the Beavers do with their rotation the next couple weeks, with an opportunity to set it up how they want it? Rasmussen around 75 this week, 85 next? Another week for fehmel to rest a dead arm, then pitch 1 of the 4 against Abilene? Thanks!

Ben — I think you are on the right track. I would expect a Heimlich/Rasmussen/Thompson rotation in the postseason. On a side note, that’s a bad to the bone rotation.

How close is Baylor to re-entering the top 25? Their RPI and SOS appear to be much stronger than some teams with comparable records that are ranked.

Guest — Steve Rod’s boys were on the board in our discussion on the Top 25 last night. Good to see the Bears getting order restored over the past few weeks. If you read my stuff earlier in the year, you know I really like that club. Such a gritty/tough bunch.

Southern Miss is solidly in the field, if not seeking a hosting spot in the field. La Tech has the non conference and has solidified their CUSA record and although things could go wrong, Tech looks solidly in the field for now as well. (To give it perspective, Tech has a better RPI, more top 100 and top 50 wins and a better record in CUSA, that is a better league than the BIG Ten, all compared to Nebraska with lower numbers in literally EVERY metric and stat but you have Nebraska ranked) So, I would say Tech is solidly in based on how you rank Nebraska. Old Dominion has slipped some RPI but not in conference or top 100/50 wins. So… the CUSA looks like three? It seems the others (FAU, FIU, Rice, Charlotte) all tanked themselves out of out large possibility.

Kendall Rogers:

I would say Conference USA is a three-bid league right now with Louisiana Tech in as well. Lane has done a terrific job with those guys the second half of the season. On a side note, how about Charlotte’s RPI down the stretch? Down to 84. Woof.

Who do you got in the SEC East and SEC West Deciding series of who wins those divisions? I have Florida over Kentucky for the SEC East Championship and LSU over Mississippi State for the SEC West Championship!

Kendall Rogers:

I like Florida in the East, and lean MSU at home. Wouldn’t shock me if LSU wins that series, however. I loved what I saw from Coach Mainieri’s club over the weekend.
