Cal State Bakersfield announced the addition of its newest head coach on Monday in 51-year-old Bob Macaluso, who spent the 2015 season as the program's third-base coach and infield coach.

Bakersfield Tabs Bob Macaluso Head Coach

It has been a busy summer on the college baseball coaching carousel, but things finally are winding down with Cal State Bakersfield officially announcing the addition of Bob Macaluso, 51, as its new head coach.

The Roadrunners choosing Macaluso isn’t a huge surprise by any means, but the selection process certainly had some interesting moments. For instance, heralded Cal State Fullerton pitching coach Jason Dietrich was heavily in the mix for the opening, but removed his name from the search the middle of last week. Then, Cal State Northridge assistant Jordan Twohig followed suit and pulled out, while Southeast Missouri State head coach Steve Bieser, quite an interesting name in the mix, also pulled out of the search. Bakersfield, sources tell was very interested in hiring a coach they felt would stay put for several years. Macaluso, a long-time coach in the state of California, fits that bill.

“Bob has had seen success at the highest level during his time at UC Irvine and he played a major part in helping our team win the WAC tournament and advance to the NCAA regionals last season,” CSUB director of athletics Kenneth Siegfried said. “I am happy to have Bob become our head coach. I am excited about the future of Roadrunner baseball under his leadership.”

Macaluso has an interesting background in the region. He joined the Roadrunners before the 2015 season and had an instant impact, particularly with Bakersfield’s infield. Before his stint with the Roadrunners, Macaluso spent seven seasons at UC Irvine, where he helped the program go 274-136 overall, while also aiding the Anteaters in reaching the College World Series in magical fashion in 2014. Additionally, the Massachusetts native, also spent time as a coach in the Cape Cod League, while also spending several seasons as the head coach at Muhlenberg College (Pa.)

“CSU Bakersfield made a great decision in hiring Bob Macaluso to be their next head baseball coach.” Legendary UC Irvine head coach Mike Gillespie said. “Mac brings exceptional knowledge and experience to the position, a rare ability to teach, and a personality complete with a great wit and sense of humor; which creates a great rapport with his players. He is a relentless worker and proven winner. As a member of Bill Kernen’s staff, he is familiar with Bill’s accomplishments and will build upon them. Congratulations to CSUB and also to MAC.”

Macaluso and the Roadrunners will have some momentum entering the 2016 campaign. There’s familiarity with his addition, and CSUB is coming off a season which ended with a postseason berth — the highlight of it a 2-1 win over Ole Miss that ended the SEC power’s season. Bakersfield finished the past season with an impressive 37-24 overall mark and 17-9 mark in league play.

Austin Peay is the only remaining coaching search in college baseball. The Governors parted ways with long-time head coach Gary McClure after he was arrested. And while interim head coach Derrick Dunbar is a strong candidate for the opening, the Governors are in the midst of a national search.
