Buzzworthy: Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser
DURHAM, N.C. — Kyle Funkhouser has found his groove.
The Louisville junior righthander came out of the gate stronger than any pitcher in the country, striking out 12 and walking just one over seven innings of one-hit, shutout ball on Opening Day. Then he went through a tough three-week stretch, when bitterly cold weather and Louisville’s shaky defense made it tough for him to get into a rhythm. Funkhouser struggled against Arkansas State and Miami, allowing 12 combined runs (nine earned) and seven walks over 10 innings in those two starts, and in between he took a tough-luck loss against Xavier. It was an unexpected turn after his brilliant start to the season.
