Southern Miss Wins Riveting Mound Duel

At The Ballpark

STARKVILLE, Miss. — It was a tale of two aces with very different styles, but the same results: zero after zero on the Dudy Noble Field scoreboard.

Southern Miss righthander Walker Powell and Mississippi State lefty Ethan Small went toe to toe in a classic pitcher’s duel Friday afternoon, and both walked away with no-decisions, because neither gave opposing hitters an opening to push across any runs. Southern Miss finally broke through for a run in the 10th to earn a taut 1-0 victory that showcased high-level pitching and defense on both sides.

“It makes it fun. It makes it a lot more competitive,” Powell said of the duel with Small. “Every pitch matters in games like that. Definitely it keeps you on your toes, it’s a lot of fun to play in … You love playing in games like this, man, you dream of it. I’m glad I got to do it with these guys.”
