CWS: Day One In Pictures

College World Series

So how was YOUR first day of the College World Series? You happy? Angry? Bummed that your team is 0-1? Ecstatic that your team is 1-0?

A pair of scintillating one run games took place on Day One in TD Ameritrade Park, and both of them were come-from-behind affairs. Oregon State edged Cal State Fullerton 6-5 and LSU outlasted Florida State 5-4. Of course, I will assume you read the write-ups from my cohorts Aaron Fitt and Kendall Rogers, right?

Well take heed StitchHeads, just remember in the last 36 years only three teams have lost their first game and then come back to win the national championship; South Carolina in 2010, Oregon State in 2006 and USC in 1998. How about the teams that won today? Well you should be happy, because 23 of the last 27 national titles have been won by teams that started 2-0.

Here are some of the images and views from today’s first two games of the CWS from my lens and Lady StitchHeads lens…

OREGON STATE 6
CAL STATE FULLERTON 5

Fullerton slugger Timmy Richards puts a charge into this one, giving the Titans’ a 3-0 lead early on.

The Cal State Fullerton bench explodes after Timmy Richards three-run homer.

Scott Hurst’s scintillating grab while simultaneously crashing into the wall was an #ESPNTop10 nominee.

The Hurst magic continued on this near-collision with second baseman Sahid Valenzuela. But Hurst held on for the out.

But the Titan good fortunes started to run out as third baseman Taylor Bryant dropped this easy pop-up in foul territory.

K.J. Harrison & Co. started their comeback from a 5-1 deficit with a four-run sixth inning.

Jake Mulholland came on in relief of Jake Thompson and excelled, throwing 4.1 innings of 0-hit ball.

He also got some help from hid defense as Steven Kwan goes all “scorpion” on us for this outfield catch.

All this just left “Super Fan” hopping mad. I thought he was about to go flying over the railing and into the stands below.

Then there was this, the youngest fan at the College World Series. This little tyke was just four months old and had parents who were Nebraska and Boston Red Sox fans.

Home plate umpire Jeff Head picks up a dead bird – as another one goes swooping by – right before the ninth inning began. I’m telling ya’, these birds are everywhere at TD Ameritrade Park, dive-bombing the field to get the moths that gather there on the grass. Every once in a while you get one that takes a header to the ground and perishes.

Oregon State head coach Pat Casey and his Beavers watch the final out of the win over Fullerton go skyward.

GAME TWO
FLORIDA STATE 5
LSU 6

Dylan Busby had plenty to yell about, including his two-run home run which put the Seminoles up 2-0 right off the bat… no pun intended.

Busby also had some MoJo going on the base paths too, getting this safe call from third base umpire Troy Fullwood.

LSU’s Kramer Robertson can’t believe the called third strike that just made him the third out of the inning.

Florida State pitcher Tyler Holton, who was pretty brilliant most of the night, instructs his catcher Cal Raleigh to throw the dropped third strike to first base. Little did he know this would lead to LSU’s unlikely first run scored when Antoine Duplantis went from first base to home on a dropped third strike.

Once again LSU won despite ace Alex Lange not being his usual self, giving up four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Michael Papierski rounds second on his way to completing a home run trot. His fifth inning solo shot kept LSU in the game in the middle innings.

J.C. Flowers is dead meat at third base on this attempt to extend the inning. This play was part of three straight innings where the Tigers snuffed out the Noles with an inning-ending double play.

Jared Poche had a historic night, earning his first CWS win and also pulling in the 38th win of his career, which is now tied for the most in LSU history.

The epic play of the night. Cole Freeman slides into home as Cal Raleigh had time but couldn’t make the catch. Home umpire Mark Uyl is all over this call.

Jump up! LSU is sitting pretty after this big first round win over Florida State
